Primitiu de Bellmunt

The soul of the Priorat

The Priorat’s wine heritage

Primitiu de Bellmunt is a wine qualified by the Priorat DOQ as a Wine of Singular Site and old vines. Made with grapes from the old vines of the “Els Molins” plot, more than 100 years old. Vineyards grown traditionally with respect and sensitivity for the terroir. It has been made in a stainless steel tank and aged for twelve months in French oak barrels.

Few wines like our Primitiu de Bellmunt reflect the essence of the Priorat region so faithfully. Its soul For several reasons. As its name suggests — Primitiu — this red wine is produced using the indigenous Garnacha and Carignan varieties harvested on vines that are more than 100 years old in our plots of land named El Grinyó and les Molins. These old vines are planted in steep fields of slate withstanding the variations of the weather in these lands with ease to give all their fruits: 300g per vine.

To achieve all this, we have come to an understanding of our vines and harvest them the way our ancestors did: cultivating them with respect and sensitivity where our soil seems to understand and compensate us generously for our will and the traditional attitude of Celler Bartolomé.

Nowadays, technological progress allows us to take advantage of the characteristics of the excellent vineyards, pointing out the optimal moments for the hand-harvested harvest and the subsequent processes of fermentation and maceration of the must, to absorb and savor the landscape, the spirit and the soul of the Primitive of Bellmunt.

Collection and production

The varieties are produced individually, to then be mixed, until we get a wine that is the result of the growth potential of our old vines.

Vinification is carried out at a controlled temperature of between 26-28°C, and must remain in fermentation vats for 18 days in order to achieve a wine with the correct level of color and polyphenols. Malolactic fermentation took place spontaneously in tanks at the right temperature in order to refine and add velvety touches to the wine, while preserving it microbiologically.

Wine characteristics

This wine is of an intense cherry red colour and aroma, both elegant and expressive with a warm background adding toasted overtones, sensations of creamy oak, and both chocolate and caramel. Light mineral tones over a background of jellied ripe dark fruits. Powerful to the palate, it is complex, pleasant, meaty, well-structured, spicy and slightly mineral, with a sensation of ripened fruit that can already be perceived upon smelling. Its tannins are sweet, mature and very well-integrated. This is a well-structured, sweet wine instilled with volume and a fine balance between fruit, tannins and wood as it crosses the palate, providing us with an excellent end, broad and concentrated in its overall features.
